Being a full-time classroom teacher requires all of the strengths of the SIX headlined by possesing a thick skin- an example of the necessity of which is illustrated by the fact that of all 9 enneagram types, "The Skeptic" is the only one with a title that is connotatively negative. That said I wondered why the specificity of "substitute teacher was used instead of just a "teacher". While both fit our profile there are inherent differences in the two positions and despite the short-term nature of the title- in the world of education the term "substitute" is synonymous with "essential" in terms of their importance in our profession Substitute teaching requires you show up, have a thick-skin, are observant, not care too much about academic rigor unless you are a long-term sub, and understand the limitations of your position as a guest teacher but also understand the concept that "every kid has a currency" and that currency is called their cellphone. Teaching full-time requires all of the aforementioned but add in the organization of Martha Stewart, the patience of a saint, the savvy of streetfighter, the intution of a ship's captain, the humor and wit of a stand-up comedian, the vocal regulation of an opera singer and the discernment of God herself. Tough profession but for those who are called to it- there is no finer.
