I agree with you. It's not that we, as INTPs, know a bunch of random facts. It's because we apply our logical analysis to ideas, objects, and situations in a way that creates the shortest pathway to understanding. It makes us able to kind of just "understand things" at their most basic level, which can lead to fast and generally correct conclusions. (I stopped keeping irrelevant information in my brain a looong time ago haha) ALSO, I like to make obscure correlations and connections and references to things, something I think INTPs all like to do to a degree because it's fun; I think the author misinterprets this ability as "walking encyclopedia".
